Kamala Harris
We are rightfully, if not unsurprisingly, starting this list with the one and only, history-making Kamala Devi Harris. While she is now holding the highest government position of any woman in the country and in fact, any woman in American history, she has actually been serving in public office long before she arrived in the White House. The Vice President, who is of African American and Asian descent, was the former senator representing California and was the state’s attorney general prior to her senate seat. Like all women, Vice President Harris wears many hats. Kamala to the general public is known as Mamala to her two stepchildren through her marriage with our country’s first First Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
As Vice President Harris repeatedly proclaims, “I may be the first, but won’t be the last.” Not only will it be exciting to see what she achieves in Washington over the next four years, but it will also be wonderful to see all the little girls, the black girls and girls of color that she empowers and inspires along the way.

Michelle Obama

Amanda Gorman
If there’s anyone that’s already proven
to be a breakout star this early in the
year, it’s undoubtedly Amanda Gorman.
Maya Moore
Basketball athlete Maya Moore is a
star on and off the court. She was
the first overall pick in the 2011
WNBA draft and it’s no surprise why.
Naomi Osaka
Halfway across the world, tennis star
Naomi Osaka, who is of African American
and Japanese descent, took home the
Australian Open Women’s Singles title

public figures we constantly see in the media.

DELICIOUS BFC FOODS

Edna Lewis
Edna Lewis (April 13, 1916 – February 13, 2006) was a renowned American chef, teacher, and author who helped refine the American view of Southern cooking. She championed the use of fresh, in season ingredients and characterized Southern food as fried chicken (pan, not deep-fried), pork, and fresh vegetables – most especially greens. She wrote and co-wrote four books which covered Southern cooking and life in a small community of freed slaves and their descendants.

Wellness Movements
We started as a group of women who teamed up with the Birthing Project to implement the Shangazi Program.
This grass roots program matched pregnant women to mentors who coached parents from pregnancy until the child was at least one year old. Within 4 years of implementation, BWW began moving upstream to address systems and political policy by becoming a California 501 (c) (3) non profit in 1997.
