This past Sunday, Cassandra Monique Batie, otherwise known by her stage name Andra Day, became the first black artist to be awarded a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama in thirty-five years. You read that right – thirty-five years. Andra Day’s portrayal of Billie Holiday in the film United States vs. Billie Holiday defied the odds and took home one of the night’s biggest awards. She is only the second black woman in history to achieve such a feat, following Whoopi Goldberg who won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama back in 1986. If that isn’t impressive enough, Ms. Day’s award-winning portrayal was in fact her debut film performance.

This is definitely just the dawn for Ms. Day and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the award season has in store for the best actress.
